Mardi Gras de la Louisiane

Krewe Fleur de Lis

Krewe Fleur de Lis was established February 2005. Founders are Kathy Barth and Marlene Sawrie. The Krewe is a social, exclusive, private and non-profit organization for approximately 80 women expressly for upholding the celebration of traditions and ceremonies of Mardi Gras in Louisiana. The women revelers will host a ball for its members and their guests every year during the Mardi Gras season along with other special events. The revelers will also participate in the Alexandria Mardi Gras Association parade.

The legend of the Fleur de Lis is an amusing one in which Clovis, King of the Franks, on the way to war crossed the river and on the banks of the Lys was a field of lillies namely called the "iris" or "fleur-de-Lis". He picked one up and stuck it in his helmet as a symbol of his future victory. The king adopted this symbol as an attribute of sovereignty and on the King's scepter a symbol for royalty. The fleur de lis also acquired a strong religious meaning and power in which the three petals are in the shape of the Holy Trinity. Coins (now used as doubloons) during the time France was called Gaul was depicted with a woman holding a lily in her hand. FLEUR DE LIS IS THE SYMBOL OF ROYALTY, AND WAS USED AS A SYMBOL OF DIGNITY FOR THE ACADIANS AND CAJUNS. In connection with the spirit of Mardi Gras traditions, Louisiana has embraced this symbol lovingly.

The Krewe colors are the traditional purple, green and gold of Mardi Gras.

Purple to express royal majesty, sovereignty and justice. Green to express faith, hope, joy and loyalty in love. Gold to express power, generosity and elevation of mind. Together the women revelers of the Krewe Fleur de Lis are powerful, loyal, joyful and fun-loving!!! Krewe Fleur de Lis has the Queen's Announcement Party or "Fleur Fling" in November where her Royal Majesty Queen Fleur de Lis and Her Royal Court are named. The Krewe lady revelers and their guests will toast Her Royal Majesty Queen Fleur de Lis IV and her Royal Court at the annual Ball 'Serenade Under the Mardi Gras Moon' on January 31, 2009 to be held at the Best Western of Alexandria Convention Center. The Fleur de Lis lady revelers have adopted their Krewe Toast as:

May we never cease to love!
May we never cease to celebrate and have fun!
May we never cease to be good friends …...
Laissez les bon tempts roulez! (Let the good times roll)!!!!
