Krewe of Alexandra
The Krewe of Alexandra was the first all women's
krewe in Central Louisiana. We were founded and established
in 1990. Our captain has been Shirley Baudoin for 16 years and
she will remain as captain until she chooses a successor. Connie
Gates is our Co Captain and has been for the last two years
and will remain as Co Captain.
The first mardi Gras Ball was held February 11, 1991 at the
Hotel Bentley. Every ball thereafter was held at the Hotel Bentley
until it was closed. The name Alexandra comes from the town
Alexandria and the part fact, part fiction story of a mysterious
lady names Alexandra. The membership is limited to 65 members
and is by invitation only. We are governed by our captain, co
captain and a board of 6 members chosen by a drawing of those
willing to serve. We choose a Queen and 2 Princesses by a random
drawing of those willing to serve.
We are proud to note that 4 other lady krewe's have originated
from the Krewe of Alexandra. Our colors are purple to express
our passion for fun, and gold to express our wealth of friendship.
Our theme for each ball changes with each new year. The krewe
members decorate the ballroom to express the theme for that
year. We have participated in the Alexandria Mardi Gras Association
Parade since the beginning in 1994. The krewe also participates
in the AMGA Children's Parade some years.
We have also had two of our krewe members serve as President
of the Alexandria Mardi Gras Association. We also have participated
in the Pinecrest Mardi Gras Parade for several years. We also
began the tradition of a local Mardi Gras Krewe hosting the
Feast of Epiphany by hosting the first one at St. James Episcopal
with Reverand Paul Tunkle. It has since moved to St. Rita and
a different krewe hosts it each year. The krewe members also
chose to give back to the community and have helped out the
American Cancer Society every year. In 2006-2007, the Krewe
of Alexandra raised over $18,000 for Bella Tarver. Bella is
a 3 year old native of Central Louisiana that was diagnosed
with Leukemia. The krewe also participates in the American Cancer
Society Relay for Life every year to help the American Cancer
Society raise money for cancer patients.
We are just a bunch of working women that love to party and
love Mardi Gras!
