Krewe of the Gratiae
The Krewe of the Gratiae is
an all women Mardi Gras krewe of 165 members. Gratiae was
founded in March of 1998 by Jan Bordelon, Cindy Crotty,
Debbie Finn, Colette Glankler, and Beth Ledet. Krewe members
are referred to as “goddesses” and the krewe logo
depicts the three goddess sisters. The word Gratiae means
Graces in Greek Mythology. The three Graces are Aglaea (Splendor),
Eurphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer). They are usually
considered daughters of Zeus and Eurynome. The three Graces
represent beauty and charm in nature and in human life.
They love all things beautiful and are said to bestow talents
to mortals. The legend of the Gratiae can be seen in the
stars once every year when the skies open for song, dance,
and happiness to grace the Mardi Gras season.
The Krewe of the Gratiae held its first ball in February
of 1999. Every year our ball has a different theme. Some
themes of the past have been Galactic Goddesses, Goddesses
of Light, Goddesses of the Mystic Night, Goddesses of Poseidon,
Goddesses of the Moulin Rouge, and Goddesses of the Caribbean.
Last year we celebrated our 10th Anniversary with “A
Night at the Oscars.” This year, our 12th annual Mardi
Gras ball promises to be a high rolling good time as the
Goddesses of Gratiae: Live from Las Vegas take the stage
on January 16, 2010!
In commemoration of our 10th Anniversary, The Krewe of
the Gratiae premiered a new float in the 2008 Alexandria
Mardi Gras Association parades.
