On Friday, February 12, college cheerleaders and classic cars will
kick off the 17th anniversary of Alexandrias family-oriented
Mardi Gras weekend. The 3rd annual College Cheerleaders and Classic
Cars Parade will begin at 4:30 PM. This parade will follow the same
route as Saturdays annual Childrens Parade, in downtown
Alexandria, and will consist of classic cars paired with college
cheerleaders from colleges and universities in Louisiana and Arkansas.
Taste of Mardi Gras was created in 1997 as a fundraiser for the
Cenla Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association (LRA). The
first year it was held in conjunction with the grand opening of
the Alexandria Riverfront Center and was named Taste on the
Riverfront. There were 14 food booths and approximately 350
people attended the first Taste. Today, Taste of Mardi
Gras has grown to over 3500 attendees annually. The date of the
event coincides with the Alexandria Mardi Gras weekend to offer
visitors a Friday night event and another reason to come early to
central Louisiana for the Mardi Gras weekend celebrations. This
premier event is a kick-off for the Mardi Gras weekend
in Alexandria.
Each year the Alexandria Mardi Gras Association chooses persons
of distinction, who have had positive impacts on the quality of
life in Louisiana, to serve as parade Grand Marshals. This years
College Cheerleaders & Classic Cars Parade Grand Marshal is
Felix Guillot of Alexandria. The Childrens
Parade Grand Marshal is Kelly Bernard,
2009 Miss Louisiana Outstanding Teen. The Krewe Parade Grand Marshal
is Blair Abene, 2008 Miss Louisiana.
The goal of the AMGA is to provide a cultural event, appealing to
all cross sections of the community, state, and region, to help
stimulate the economy.
2010 Mardi Gras weekend events are sponsored by the AMGA, the City
of Alexandria, the Alexandria/Pineville Area Convention and Visitors
Bureau, the Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority, and
American Airlines. For additional information, contact AMGA president,
Zina Ford, at (318) 792-4992.
